Cylindrical Grinding Services at Industrial Grinding

Cylindrical grinding is a machining process used to grind parts and components with a central axis of rotation. We focus on servicing, repairing, and retrofitting moving parts from machines and equipment back to factory specifications. Whether you need low- or high-volume cylindrical grinding, we can do the job quickly to avoid delays and unnecessary downtime in your production process.

Two common methods of cylindrical grinding we offer:

OD Grinding

OD grinding machines utilize centers to rotate the piece while the grinding wheel works on the external surface. The piece also moves in the opposite direction of the grinding wheel. OD grinding is for external grinding only.

ID Grinding

The opposite of OD grinding is ID grinding, which refers to finishing the interiors of a piece. The grinding wheel goes inside the object, using a collet or fixture to keep the piece in place while the wheel rotates in the opposite direction to perform the grinding.

Vast Grinding Capabilities

We work on diverse materials through our wide range of grinding capabilities, allowing us to provide consistent results on all of your machine parts. Regardless of the material’s complexity, our operators are experts who can handle it more precisely. Materials we commonly work with are low alloy steel, tool steel, cast iron, ceramic, chromium, aluminum, stainless series and non-metallic materials.

Types of grinding we excel in:

  • Fine grinding: The speed and aggressiveness of super abrasive wheels produce extremely fine finishes through fine grinding.
  • Angle grinding: The primary application of angle grinding is to grind metal with abrasive grinding discs. It’s an incredibly versatile method that can also polish or cut through materials as needed.
  • Taper grinding: Using a taper, we perform grinding on objects with angled surfaces. It’s commonly used to create a tapered shape outside a workpiece.
  • Wet grinding: With the addition of water, oil, or a specific type of emulsion, wet grinding reduces friction and heat, which helps maintain the shape of the workpiece and reduces wear on the grinding tool while improving surface finishes.
  • High-speed grinding: At high speeds, the grinding wheel can remove material faster with less clogging or glazing compared to conventional wheels.

Common Applications of Our Cylindrical Grinding Services

Our cutting-edge horizontal and universal grinding machines can process a broad range of parts and components with sizes of 34″ in outer diameter and 169″ in length. Tight tolerances close to 0.0001″ are maintained, even with our client’s custom specifications.

Applications we can work on include:

  • Precision bearings and shafts
  • Cylindrical and conical workpieces
  • Pistons, rods, spindles, and gears
  • Tool sharpening and regrinding
